2009-10-27MedPage Today (10/23, Gever) reported that, according to a study presented at the annual meeting of the American College of Rheumatology, "going beyond the recommended dosing of allopurinol (Zyloprim) to treat patients with gout may help prevent recurrence safely" by keeping "serum urate to less than six mg/dL." New Zealand researchers arrived at this conclusion after examining "90 people with gout who were on a stable dose of allopurinol for at least one month," then following 36 participants whose "dose of allopurinol was increased anywhere from 50 to 400 milligrams above the recommended range." Eighty-six percent of those patients "saw a drop in serum urate levels to six mg/dL or less" over 12 months without any "increase in toxicity."
